In 2009, the CDC reported 1484 cases of imported malaria in the US; 18 of these cases occurred in US military personnel. The majority of these cases were in people who had traveled to malaria-risk areas for the following reasons:
- Visiting friends or relatives
- Vacationing
- US military deployment
- Missionary work
- Business
- Studying or teaching
